A community sports centre is going from strength-to-strength since the completion of a £2 million renovation and extension.

The regeneration project transformed the Daventry Phoenix Sports Academy (DPSA), creating a fully accessible, state-of-the art extended gym hall, new changing areas and toilets, and a new café area and parent viewing lounge.

The new facilities at the Ashby Road centre have helped the Academy’s popular gymnastics club expand even further, to the point where it now boasts around 1,200 weekly members.

Its gymnasts have also been gaining accolades on a regional level, with two of the squad securing gold medals in the East Midlands Regional OOA Level 4 Championships recently.

The project to transform the centre was led by Daventry District Council and the Daventry Phoenix Sports Academy, with major financial support coming from Sport England’s National Lottery 2012 Olympic Legacy fund, and Landform Estates.

Work started in August 2016 and was completed the following summer, with Paralympic track and field athlete Sam Ruddock cutting the ribbon on the new centre in an official opening ceremony in October 2017.

The building’s enhanced fully-accessible facilities have enabled DPSA to support new partnerships with local disability groups and schools, by providing regular specialised activity programmes.

It now offers Rebound Therapy – a trampoline-based exercise therapy which provides opportunities for movement, therapeutic exercise and recreation for people with special needs.

Other sports and activities are proving popular at the centre too, with judo, trampoline, freestyle, adult gym and a range of parent and child sessions all being offered.

Marie Bannigan, Centre Director at the Daventry Phoenix Sports Academy, said: “We have had wonderful feedback about the centre since it re-opened and people are really impressed with the standard of the facilities and coaching, as well as the programme of activities we are offering.

“I’m so proud of our young gymnasts who have achieved some excellent results on a regional stage recently. These girls have had all the advantages of the superior and safe training facilities and methods that are now available at the centre, and we’re certain that is one of the key factors in all they are achieving at the moment.”

Ian Vincent, Chief Executive of Daventry District Council, said: “We were very proud to be able to support Daventry Phoenix Sports Academy’s ambitions to create this fantastic community facility, which is doing such wonderful work to help young people achieve their sporting potential.

“I would like to congratulate the Academy, its team of gymnasts, their coaches and their supporters on their recent successes. The Centre is proving to be a real asset to the District, and it is very pleasing to see it so well used by people of all ages and abilities.”
